Substance Abuse Awareness Activist

Since getting sober in May, 2005, Darryl has been an avid activist in bringing the realities of drug and alcohol abuse in the forefront of the public eye, particularly within the military. As a former Merchant Marine, Darryl served in two wars while navigating massive 900-foot oil tankers throughout the world. His experiences have resulted in a unique understanding of the dangers that exist among our nation's service men and women, and the inherent risk drugs and alcohol pose as a popular outlet for stress and trauma.

Darryl is also diligent in his quest to increase drug and alcohol awareness within our nation's high schools and colleges. Having began his habit while attending Maine Maritime Academy, Darryl notes that high schools and colleges all over the US are the starting point for many drug and alcohol related problems. It's the place where kids begin to experiment with different types of drugs, and alcohol has become a popular outlet across nearly all colleges and universities.

With an ever-growing need for increased awareness, education and reform, drug and alcohol addiction threatens every class of American life. And Darryl is on a mission to provide those suffering with addiction, and their families, with resources and help to get back on their feet and regain control of their lives.

In his quest for reform, Darryl has met with a number of law and policy makers in Washington and beyond. His hope is that, with persistence, his message will be heard and headed, and that our country can initiate model recovery programs and policies which can be adopted throughout the world.
