Darryl Hagar is the author of The Man Overboard, his memoirs of 25 years battling drug and alcohol addiction, as well as a complete series of graphic novels aimed at revealing the true face of addiction. He continues to write as part of his own recovery plan, and hopes to inspire millions with his candid, raw and often shocking words and recollections.
Darryl began writing as a form of personal therapy as a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. However, as he began to recall his exploits and lessons learned from over 25 years of abuse, he soon realized the dramatic impact his story could have on others. At that point, Darryl set his sights on authoring a book, recounting all of his experiences, both good and bad, to serve as a contribution to increasing awareness of drug and alcohol abuse. His recollection of events, while often shocking and raw, are a wake up call for many about how real, and how widespread the problem really is.
In early 2009, Darryl's dream became a reality with the release of The Man Overboard (BookSurge Publishing), a 604 page memoir of his years battling drugs and alcohol. As a literal guidebook to recovery, this unique autobiography takes the readers through the gripping story of Darryl's past, with vivid imagery and detail that keeps readers spellbound. But, more importantly, this book shows the inspiring path toward recovery, not only from drugs and alcohol, but the recovery of life filled with purpose and joy.
During the writing process, Darryl also realized that several chapters of his book were relevant within a variety of high-risk demographics, such as military service men and women, and high school and college students. Darryl reached out to his friend, and master illustrator, Glen Chadbourne, to create a series of specific graphic novels detailing his exploits. Thus, The Man Overboard Graphic Novel series was born. Citing a specific appeal to younger readers, each graphic novel recounts specific stories of unabashed tragedy while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, but also presents the reader with a face-to-face reality check of the potential outcomes abusing drugs and alcohol can ensue. Capping each issue off is the point of decision, which we all face in our lives, and the revealing possible outcomes which results from those choices. These graphic novels are not only unique and engaging, but serve a higher purpose through educating the reader about the realities of drug and alcohol abuse.
