About Darryl
Darryl Hagar grew up in mid coast Maine with his mother, father, three brothers, and sister.
He is a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy spending four years of rigorous training and education, earning a Bachelor of Nautical Science degree. Additionally, he holds a United States Coast Guard Chief Mate License, unlimited tonnage, any oceans.
As an active drug addict and alcoholic, Darryl sailed for big oil corporations for 20 years, carrying millions of barrels of petroleum around the world. In May 2005, Darryl finally left the industry and got sober. Now Darryl works with individuals, groups and organizations to increase addiction awareness, but more importantly, provide real hope and help toward recovery for those suffering with addiction. His raw and shocking message resonates with his audience, inspiring hope, courage and triumph.
Darryl currently resides in Portland, Maine raising his ten year old son and travels to colleges, jails, prisons, and other large groups throughout the country, speaking about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. He has shared his message of empowerment and responsibility with hundreds of groups, and with the release of his book, The Man Overboard, Darryl hopes to reach even more people in crisis and help them on their voyage to sobriety. |

Darryl's Story

Perhaps the most compelling part of Darryl Hagar is his story recounted in his memoirs, The Man Overboard.
For 25 years, Darryl led a clandestine life of severe drug and alcohol addiction while serving as an officer in the elite merchant marine corps.
Responsible for hauling millions of gallons of raw crude through the world's most dangerous waters, Darryl found himself deep in the throngs of addiction, which threatened his career, his family and his life.
