"Darryl:
Finally getting a chance to write, although I finished your book just three days after it arrived. You've put out a real page-turner, Darryl! Amazing story. I read a ton of books, probably more than thirty a year, and I really enjoyed this literary experience (not to say the story isn't tragic and an eye-opener). You should be very proud of where you are at. The website looks terrific, and I've seen some of the YouTube videos of your presentations. Keep up the great work, man! "

"I have had the pleasure of viewing your website and wanted to let you know how proud I am having known you and what you are currently doing. As one of your prior supervisors, I apologize for not being more in-tuned with your needs at that time. Just know, as time progresses, we gain wisdom through experience. I have gained from this experience. Keep up the great work! I will continue to look for the good things in life that you have accomplished."

"Darryl,
The best of luck to you in your Crusade. Going to sea is a very lonely venture, which few people realize. I have had many experiences going to sea with alcoholic Masters &Chief Engineers in the 50's & 60'. It really was a subject no one wanted to address. Now finally we have drug testing aboard commercial vessels, which has seemed to help.
I feel the main problem with seagoing alcoholics is the fact that it is very lonely at sea & individuals are unable to share their problem with others at sea.
Bless you in your Crusade"

Darryl, I am very encouraged with your sobriety. We are classmates and I share your struggle. I have been struggling since before school, now that I look back. I have been sober for months at a time for the last three or four years. Although I have fell several times I have gotten a taste of sobriety that keeps me coming back. Keep up the work. I am very proud of you for speaking out. I hope the academy will let you in, so you can help. I am in Cincinnati now and would like to get your book and possibly speak with you at some point.
One day at a time

"Darryl,
I think I sailed with you on the Overseas Chicago. I don’t remember cause we drank a lot and had good rocks from Chiriqui Grande in panama. I just read your book. sounds like me except I’m an engineer. I’m ready to change my ways. I can’t live like this anymore."

"Hi Darryl,
Just finished the book - excellent work. I did feel a little sad reading abut all the hardships you had to go through fighting your battles with additions but glad it had a happy, peaceful ending."

"Darryl
Just finished your book. Fantastic, if only I can pass it on to the right hands and it sink in. This is what it takes to open the eyes of an alcoholic, drug addict or any kind of addict, a no holding back tell all story from one who has been there. I wish you well in your continued recovery, health, and finding what it takes to fulfill your happiness with the rest of your life. Thank you for writing this book and hope if my brother chooses not to read it and looses the battle of life to the bottle that at least many more out there will pick it up, read it and give sobriety a shot I am sending it on to Ma. with my mom this weekend. I hope from her it gets read by many others in my family who think the drinking they do is manageable, not a problem and controlled but really isn't."

"Writing The Man Overboard and sharing your life experiences with alcoholism, ships, and the lessons you've learned takes great courage and will be helpful to our industry. I believe men will tuck your book in the bottom of their sea bags and read it back on the ships. I think men will look at their own lives, change their behaviors, and in turn, you will have helped prevent oil pollution and accidents. I will spread the work of your recovery and sobriety.

"Congratulations, Darryl,........I'm proud of you. Having just come back from a trip where my ex was smoking crack every few hours, I am fully aware of how addiction robs life and how tragic it can end. I'm glad you are where you are."
Peace,
Carol
"CONGRATULATIONS Darryl.

"Darryl,
I just finished reading your book and I was blown away! I can only imagine what you went thru all those years, but you were able to realize what was at risk if you continued and YOU were the only person who could make the change. I believe your story will make a difference in a lot of lives and have many reflect about their own issues and demons and hopefully find the way to get rid of them. I know it was exhausting emotionally and physically on you to complete it but it was well worth it my friend. You are in my thoughts and prayers and you are a blessing for a lot of people. Good luck and hope all is well, you deserve it!"
Sincerely,
Judi
"Darryl,
Heard about your book earlier this yr. My 41 yr old son was incarcerated in Mar. of this yr. for OUI vehicular manslaughter. I have read your intro to your story & feel it is the perfect book for him to read. Problem: at Maine State Prison in Warren I am told that books sent to inmates must be purchased at bookstore & sent directly from there. I''m unable to obtain copy from Barnes & Noble & wonder if you have any ideas that you'’d be willing to share with me. Thank you. "

"Darryl,
The MMA chapter of Puget Sound passed along your e-mail describing your book and struggles. It's refreshing to hear an honest description of the trials in life and how easy it is to get sucked in. I respect your appeal to MMA and I hope that they will let your story be told to the young men and women currently at the Academy. You hit the nail on the head, MMA is a world class organization and anything that we alumnus can do to make it an even better place....we should.
I look forward to purchasing a copy of your book. "

"Hi Darryl
I want to tell you that I have started the book and it is amazing. It's hard to believe you are still on this earth. As I was reading I could relate some of my own life in your words. I know you will have great success and actually you already have. My parents were here this weekend and My dad started reading it and wanted to finish. He is truly amazed as well. You see he was or should say is an alcoholic but has been sober for many years. He will get the book back to me soon so I can finish it. I wish you all the best.
God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change ...Courage to change the things I can ...Wisdom to know the difference... "

"Hi Darryl,
I just received and read the article from the Ellsworth American of your recent talk with sophomores at Maine Maritime Academy. Great job! You are exactly correct, things were different back when we were in school, there were far less resources available then for drug and alcohol and I don’t recall ever having the benefit of a “talk” such as the one you gave those cadets! Thanks Darryl for personally extending your contact information to each of them to call you later at anytime. Remember the peer pressure back then? At least these guys can laugh it off in front of their buddies but can take the test and contact you later in private if they need to. I do truly believe that one man can make a difference and I believe that is just what you are doing! Thank for being an inspiration to me Darryl!"
Sincerely,
Your friend and classmate.

I finished your book and truly never wanted it to end. I enjoyed it so much and feel like you were so honest and have taken such an incredible risk to write it, but I admire that and honor that about you. I shake my head every day in amazement that you are still alive, in all that you did! I know from your writing that it is truly in your heart to help others from writing this book."
